Should You Cut Up Microfiber Towels? | FAQ
Jun 16, 2025
Sometimes, a towel may seem too big to fit into an interior crevice or a small wheel nook, so you may be tempted to cut it into smaller pieces to get it to fit where you need. But, should you cut your microfiber detailing towels?
Physically, yes, you can. But, no, you should not do it. Levi explains why.
By cutting your microfiber towels, you are reducing the structural integrity of the towels and creating frayed edges that will introduce lint. Frayed edges are weak points that can cause the towel to gradually come apart by itself just by using it. Even edgeless towels have some structural "edge" that is created by how edgeless towels are made. If you wash the cut-up towels, you further degrade the structure and fibers, which will stick to other towels in your wash load.
Microfiber towels made by The Rag Company are made te be as lint-free as possible. Lint easily builds up a static charge and is very happy to cling to any surface, including your newly detailed car. If you are coating a surface on your vehicle, you could possibly coat the lint onto the car. Even if you aren't coating your car, the static charge can attract tiny dirt and metal fallout to your car's surface, getting it dirtier faster.
Bottom line, don't cut your towels. Just get smaller ones for those small places such as the Mini Miner, small Gauntlet, or 10x10 All-Purpose Terrys.
